Munnik from Arnstadt to Amsterdam

About the name

The name Munnik is in our case originating from the German word "Mönch" or Münch. The oldest tracable anchestors are Curt Münch and his wife Sara. The only thing we know of Curt is that he died in 1661 in Arnstadt, he was a butcher.

The greatgrandsons of Curt and Sara; Johann Günther and Jacob Friedrich emigrated ca. 1720 to Amsterdam. Jacob Friedrich was "Vettewarier" or Candlemaker.
The son and grandson of Jacob Friedrich had a shop in Amsterdam where they sold all kind of imported stuff (provisions).

The name Munnik is of frequent occurence in Nederland, it then often concerns families in the neighbourhood of Amsterdam and Zaandam who worked as carpenters in shipbuilding.

It is nice to remark that Johann Günther and his children were contemporaries of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was in that same time organ-player in the Neuekirche in Arnstadt.
